FAQ
The Tonight app is about sharing tonight. Tonight lets you share what you're doing and lets you discover what your friends and other interesting people are getting up to.
Unlike app's which let you check-in at places you are now, Tonight is all about places you're going to later. By knowing what's happening ahead of time, you can make sure you get where you need to be and don't miss out.
Discover
Think how often you find yourself asking the question "What are you up to tonight?" – all the time, right? Imagine having the answer to that question not just from a few friends but from everyone. Tonight updates throughout the day, every day, with everyone's plans for that night. You can follow the plans of all your Facebook friends, check out what other interesting people are doing, see what's happening across your city or even search for a particular venue to see who will be going there later.
Share
Tonight lets you share what you're doing tonight with whoever you want to tell – let a few friends know you're grabbing a drink after work, tell all your Facebook friends you'll be at that house party or let the world know you're not going to miss that concert for anything.
Whether you're staying in or going out, dressing up or dressing down, skinny dipping or cocktail sipping. Tonight lets you share the awesome life you're living.
How does it work?
Every day, starting early people share their plans for that night. We bring all these plans together for you in a live feed that lets you quickly see what people you’re interested in are doing.
As the day goes on and more and more people start figuring out what they’re getting up to, the updates speed up, your feed fills up and night starts to come alive.
Your feed becomes a real-time personalised guide of what all your friends and other people you’re interested in are doing tonight. It tells you who’s going out, who’s staying in and who’s still figuring it out. See which venues are worth checking out and know who will be where before ever stepping out the door.
By knowing what’s happening ahead of time, you know where you should go (and where you shouldn’t!) and have time to do something about it.
Finally because tonight is a dish best served fresh, after each night, we clear everyone’s feeds so that another awesome night can unfold tomorrow. Not only does this keep things fresh but just like a great night, it lets you live in the moment and not think about tomorrow.
How can I start using Tonight?
Two words: App Store.
Visit the App Store on your iPhone and download it for free.
What if I don't have an iPhone?
Beg, borrow, steal… or wait until we launch Tonight on Android, Blackberry and the web. We’re working on it so stay tuned.
How much does it cost?
Tonight is totally free so get to the app store already!
Do I need Facebook to sign up?
Yes, at this stage you can only sign up for Tonight using Facebook.
Tonight uses Facebook Connect to sign you up. This allows us to quickly identify which of your Facebook friends are already on Tonight and makes it easy for you to decide whether you also want to be friends with them on Tonight.
Privacy:
Tonight does not post anything to your Facebook account without your permission. We do not post anything to your Facebook account saying that you have installed Tonight and do not post anything you share on Tonight to Facebook unless you specifically tell us to.
Signing up with Facebook does not give us access to your Facebook password.
Where do I begin?
The best place to start is by creating a list of friends whose plans you’re interested in following and who you may want to share your plans with. The Friends screen has everything you need to get started:
- Add people you already know from the list of suggestions.
- Search for people already on Tonight and add them to your friends list by tapping the add button next to their name.
- Tell your friends who aren’t yet on Tonight to get on board by sending them a personal invitation via Facebook, Email or SMS.
Once your friends list is sorted, you’re ready to start sharing tonight. The Add Plan screen lets you share what you’ll be getting up to and the Tonight screen is your live feed of what everyone is doing tonight.
How do I follow people's plans?
Once you friends list is sorted, jump straight to the Tonight feed:
- Use the filter to choose between seeing just plans shared by your friends or also seeing public plans shared by people nearby
- The Search bar lets you search for people, plans or places and is a really quick way of seeing where a particular person is going tonight or who will be at a particular venue.
How do I share plans?
This part is dead simple:
- Tap Going out, Staying In or Not Sure on the Add Plan screen.
- Express your plan in about 110 characters.
- Choose to share your plan with particular individuals, all your friends or the world.
Your plan will then automatically appear in the live feed of friends and other people you chose to share it with – it’s a bit like sending out a tweet only you control who can read it.
What if my plans change?
No worries... just tap the “update plan” button and let everyone know.
Can I share plans for future dates?
We’re a bit of a one trick pony - you can only share plans for tonight. We think every night is an opportunity to do something awesome whether it’s dancing til dawn or just sharing a tub of ice-cream on the couch. Focusing on one night at a time helps make sure we all get the most out of every night.
Who sees plans which I share?
You are in complete control of who sees your plans. We totally understand that every night is different – sometimes you’ll want to shout your plans from the rooftops but other times your after dark activities are best kept between only you and your closest friends.
Tonight lets you decide who gets to see each plan you post. Each time you post a new plan you choose whether to share it with just a few friends, with all your friends or, by making it public, with the world. Your plan only appears in the live feeds of the people you choose to share it with.
Are plans posted to Facebook?
Tonight does not automatically post your plans to Facebook.
Tonight does however let you post your plans to Facebook if you choose to. Each time you share a plan with “All Friends” or “The World”, Tonight will ask you if you would also like to share to Facebook. (This is totally optional and this prompt can be turned off at any time under Facebook Options in Preferences.)
How do I get my friends?
We thought you’d never ask. The more people on Tonight the better it is for everyone.
Tonight lets you send personal invitations to your Facebook friends by posting an invitation to their wall or to your Contact List via email or SMS. The friends screen has everything you need to get going.
Why does my feed reset?
One of the things which bug us about social media is that everything we post, share or do usually stays out there on the interweb forever just waiting to be read out of context or seen by someone we never wanted to see it. In the real world, this doesn’t happen - we’re free to say and do what we want and don’t have to worry about our every move being recorded (usually!).
We like the way the real world works. So instead of making everything you post on Tonight available for people to see forever, each morning we clear all the plans from the night before and start the new day fresh.
Not only does this mean you get to live in the moment and not think about tomorrow, it also means nothing on Tonight is ever more than 24 hours old and is therefore fresh and relevant.
(A quick side note: although we delete your plans from everyone else’s feeds we do save them for you to see on your History screen. This screen is for your eyes only and is a great way of remembering what you’ve been getting up to since you started using Tonight.)
Who created Tonight?
Tonight is the creation of Sydney-based startup Make Tonight Count Pty Ltd. We’re a team of Sydneysiders who live to squeeze the most out of every night and created the Tonight app to help others do the same. Our HQ rotates between our Bondi base and an ever growing list of nearby bars and cafes.
We officially launched the Tonight app in May 2012. The Tonight app has been featured on the App Store "Staff Favourites", "New and Noteworthy" and "What's Hot in Social Media" lists. The Tonight app is now being used across Australia and New Zealand by people living it up and making tonight count.
